Tips for a successful interview

THE INTERVIEW

Everything you do in a job campaign will be wasted if you don't convert interviews into job offers.

Our philosophy requires that you be informed about potential employers; that you plan to control your interviews, and that you tailor your communications and the image you project to what each firm is seeking.

BE INFORMED ABOUT THE FIRMS YOU VISIT

Before you go to an interview, you should always try to learn as much as possible about each company. We mean being familiar with a firm's products, markets, number of employees, current stock quotation, growth record, recent sales profits and problems.

If you understand their concerns in relation to the job you seek, then you will be in a better position to demonstrate how you can be of value.

The principal sources from information on public companies are brokerage house reports, company annual reports, D&B reports, Fortune Magazine's Directory, Moody's Manuals, and specific yearly issues of trade magazines.

Advertising Age and Forbes are two media which publish special annual information on leading corporations. The F&S Index can also give you references to articles on specific firms. They cover over 500 leading business and trade magazines, and are available in most large libraries.

The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times Indexes are sources for articles highlighting recent developments in specific companies. If you are being interviewed by a prominent executive, his background may appear in "Who's Who." Some research here may help you identify in advance some things you have in common.
